Review and submission support

Supporting a residential design from working calculations to submission

We supported a design practice with calculations and structural drawings for a rear extension and internal alterations, taking a broad member-design package through review to a submission set.

Managing the detail across a broad structural scope

Our client practice was developing a rear-extension and internal-alterations scheme with a wide range of structural elements. We provided project-based engineering support across the calculations and drawing package, helping carry the design from working information through review and into submission-stage documents.

The client’s brief and engineering challenge

The scope included timber joists, steel beams, lintels, padstones, masonry bearings, columns and foundations. The challenge was to make those individual design tasks work as a coordinated package. A change to a beam reaction, for example, can also affect the bearing or support beneath it, so the interfaces need to remain understandable throughout review.

Our engineering approach

We supported calculation production and drawing coordination for the residential scheme, using the lead practice's reporting format. The work brought member calculations together with the corresponding structural drawing, while the review process included a drawing checklist and working material to support development of the package.

We helped progress the calculation report and drawing to the submission stage. Keeping the technical information together through those stages supported a clear handover to the lead practice: the report explained the engineering basis, while the drawing communicated the arrangement and details needed to understand the proposed structure.

Key design considerations

Review comments need to be considered in the context of the whole design. Our approach is to distinguish changes affecting structural behaviour from presentation corrections, then follow any engineering change into the relevant calculations and details. Consistent issue information is equally important, so that the team can identify the package intended for submission.

Why review bearings and foundations alongside beam design?

Beams deliver reactions into supporting construction. Padstones, masonry bearings, columns and foundations form part of that load path, so their design assumptions need to remain coordinated with the members they support.

How do we keep a review set consistent?

We work through comments against the calculation and drawing information, identify the affected elements and reconcile the package before issue. The purpose is to make the handover clear for the lead engineer and to keep outstanding questions visible at the appropriate review stage.

The outcome

WHAT WE DELIVERED

We delivered a submission-stage calculation report and structural drawing for the extension and alterations. Our support brought a broad range of structural design tasks through a defined review process and into a coordinated package for the client practice's onward project delivery.

Our project scope

  • Structural calculation production support
  • Drawing and calculation package coordination
  • Review and submission-stage documentation
