Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about our civil and structural engineering,
remote engineering support, CAD and BIM services, residential projects,
quotations and project delivery.
General
What does Xponexus Engineering do?
Xponexus Engineering provides civil and structural engineering,
CAD, BIM, drafting and remote engineering support services.
We work with engineering consultancies, contractors, developers,
architects, businesses and private clients.
What types of projects do you work on?
We support a broad range of projects including residential alterations,
extensions, loft conversions, steel and concrete structures,
retaining walls, industrial structures, commercial projects,
infrastructure-related work and engineering documentation.
Do you work with clients across the UK?
Yes. Much of our engineering and technical support can be delivered
remotely across the UK. Site attendance can also be arranged where
required and where location and project scope allow.
How do I get started with a project?
Send us your project details through our contact page, including any
available drawings, photographs, sketches, surveys or existing
structural information.
We can then review the requirement and advise on the likely scope,
information needed and quotation.
Structural Engineering
Do you provide structural calculations and drawings?
Yes. Depending on the project, we can prepare structural calculations,
design drawings, details and supporting engineering documentation.
The exact deliverables will be confirmed as part of the agreed scope.
Can you design steel beams for wall removals?
Yes. We regularly assist with structural alterations such as removing
load-bearing walls and forming larger openings.
Depending on the property, the design may include steel beams,
posts, padstones, bearings and supporting calculations.
Do you design loft conversions and rear extensions?
Yes. We can provide structural design support for loft conversions,
rear extensions and other residential alterations.
This may include beams, floor joists, roof alterations, posts,
foundations, lintels and other structural elements as required.
Can you inspect an existing structure before carrying out calculations?
Yes. Where required, a site visit can be arranged to review the
existing construction, visible structural arrangement and proposed
alterations before finalising the design.
Do you provide calculations suitable for Building Control?
We can prepare structural calculations and drawings intended to
support Building Control submissions where this forms part of the
agreed service.
Final acceptance remains subject to review by the relevant Building
Control body or other approving authority.
Do you provide foundation design?
Yes, where suitable project information is available. Foundation
design may require information relating to loads, existing construction,
ground conditions, trees, drainage and site-specific constraints.
Remote Engineering Support
What is remote engineering support?
Remote engineering support allows consultancies and engineering teams
to add technical capacity without necessarily increasing their
permanent in-house headcount.
Our engineers and technicians can support calculations, drawings,
BIM modelling, drafting and other defined project tasks as an extension
of the client’s existing team.
Can your engineers work directly with our internal team?
Yes. Depending on the agreed working arrangement, our engineers and
technicians can coordinate directly with client teams, follow internal
standards and support existing project workflows.
Can we use your support only when our workload is high?
Yes. One of the main benefits of flexible engineering support is the
ability to increase delivery capacity during busy periods, project
peaks or temporary resource shortages.
Do you provide long-term embedded engineering resources?
Yes. We can discuss both project-based support and longer-term
resource arrangements depending on the client’s technical needs,
workload and required disciplines.
CAD & BIM
What CAD and BIM services do you provide?
Our support can include engineering drawings, drafting, BIM modelling,
drawing production, detailing, model updates and coordination.
Can you work with our drawing templates and standards?
Yes. We can work to client-provided drawing standards, templates,
layer conventions, title blocks and agreed document-control procedures.
Can you update drawings based on mark-ups?
Yes. We can work from marked-up drawings, PDFs, sketches and design
comments to revise and develop drawing packages.
Quotes, Fees & Project Information
How much does structural engineering work cost?
Fees depend on the project size, complexity, number of structural
elements, available information, required drawings and whether a
site visit is needed.
Contact us with your project details and we can provide a quotation
based on the required scope.
What information should I send for a quotation?
Where available, please send:
- Architectural or planning drawings.
- Existing and proposed floor plans.
- Photographs of the property or structure.
- A brief description of the proposed work.
- Any previous structural drawings or calculations.
- Relevant surveys or site information.
Will additional design changes cost extra?
Minor clarification may be included within the agreed scope, but
significant changes to the architectural layout, structural scheme
or project requirements may require additional design work and
additional fees.
We will normally advise you where a requested change falls outside
the original scope.
Site Visits & Construction
Do all projects require a site visit?
No. Some projects can be designed using sufficiently detailed and
reliable drawings, photographs, surveys and other information.
However, a site visit may be recommended where the existing structural
arrangement is unclear or where site-specific verification is required.
Can my builder contact you if they have questions?
Yes. For projects designed by Xponexus Engineering, builders and other
project parties may contact us for reasonable clarification regarding
our issued structural information.
What happens if the site conditions are different from the drawings?
Construction should not proceed on the affected element until the
discrepancy has been reviewed.
Existing structures can differ from available plans, and the design
may need to be revised if the actual construction or dimensions are
significantly different from those assumed.
Do you supervise construction?
Not unless construction supervision, inspection or site attendance
is specifically included within the agreed scope.
Contractors remain responsible for workmanship, construction methods,
temporary stability, sequencing and site safety unless otherwise
expressly agreed.
Turnaround & Communication
How long does a structural design take?
Turnaround depends on project complexity, workload and the quality
of information available at the start of the project.
We will normally provide an estimated programme when confirming the
quotation or scope.
Can you work to urgent deadlines?
Where capacity allows, we can consider urgent project requirements.
Please tell us your required date when submitting your enquiry so
that we can confirm whether it is achievable.
